Below is a list of Questions that can be a guide to use when interviewing nannies.
- Why did you decide to become a nanny?
- Talk me through your CV and why you left each job. (It is always good to go through the nannies CV together to make sure they know and can remember the jobs they have taken throughout their career).
- Have you ever had a period of unemployment and why? (If this is traveling ask them if they are sure they have the travelling bug out of their system, there is nothing worse than having a nanny for a few months and then they decide they need to go and explore the world again).
- Why do you enjoy looking after children?
- How would you entertain the children (give your children's ages for an example) on a daily basis?
- How would you entertain the children if you were in the house all day?
- Can you cook? What can you cook?
- Do you hold a First Aid Certificate? If not, would you be happy to go on a course?
- What would you do if my child fell over in the garden/park and cut their knee, or they fell off the bed and hurt their head, or choked while eating their dinner? (Give different examples and see what their reaction is).
- How would you discipline my child?
- Ask about their family background, where they grew up, what their parents do and if they have any brothers or sisters.
- How long are they planning to stay in childcare?
- What do they think the role of a nanny involves?
- What household duties are they happy to perform?
- Are they happy to do overtime/babysitting?
- When did they pass their driving test?
- Have they ever had an accident? (ask to see their driving license)
- Would they be happy to show you their driving if they took the position?
- If using their own car, have they got relevant insurance for driving children around and correct seat belts in the back of the car?
- What salary are they looking for? And when can they start?
Nannies Today will have already interviewed your prospective nanny extensively but it is useful for you to ask your own questions so that you get a feel for how they respond to you and that you feel comfortable with their answers.
